We are back from Gulf Wars, and what a start to the Spring Show Season it was! Thank you to everyone for coming by to say Hello and to see what’s new! ^_^
Speaking of new items, due to popular demand, I will begin offering circlets and coronets in the shop, as well as more enamel work. I’ve begun working on glass enamel paintings and even some Renaissance-style miniatures, so keep an eye out for those.
Brian is also hard at work on cutting period gemstones for me to use in my work, as well as for other jewelers who want something to add more authenticity to their works.
Currently I have Blackstone Raid on the calendar, and PENNSIC! I am still waiting to hear back about Aethelmearc War Practice and a few other non-SCA events, but you’ll see us around, I’m sure!
First off, if you met me at the Ren Fest, thank you for visiting my page! I know that it’s kind of in shambles right now, but I’m working on it as we clean up from the event and get ready for the next ones on the list.
As for the festival itself, it was an amazing time for all of us with surprisingly good weather, first weekend aside. What happened? Well, we had a brief but exciting onslaught of near-hurricane force winds and pelting rain! When we saw the jewelry boards covered in metal start to rattle and peel off the cart, we abandoned ship and hightailed it down to the main shop, Versailles Jewelers. Luckily we didn’t have to wait long until the weather calmed enough for us to go back up top and reset the chainmaille cart. That seemed to be the worst of it, as for the rest of the festival the weather was all right, if a bit hot some days. It felt like Mother Nature got it all out of her system in one afternoon!
Not much else exciting happened, but i did make good progress on my scalemaille armor. I’ll keep the blog (and my instagram) updated on its progress!
Although there was a funny moment on a chilly day. I let my hair down, which I usually have up, and a lady started petting it because she thought I was wearing a Jon Snow cloak! Admittedly, my hair is dark, wavy and there’s, like, three feet of it, so I don’t blame her, especially when I had my friend take a picture and I saw what I looked like from the back. Easy closet cosplay? I think so!
I don’t usually get the chance to take many pictures, but here’s a few:
If you haven’t been to the Pittsburgh Renaissance Festival, you should come! The food is good, the people are friendly, and you can always stop by the “Spoils of War” cart for a quick chainmaille lesson or to just geek out about things in general.
So, until next time, I leave you with the traditional Rennie goodbye. Sing along!
Blackstone Raid is happening this week! We’ll be in West Virginia, and looking forward to seeing a bunch of our friends! ^_^
Lemony will probably spend some time fishing, and otherwise running about and enjoying herself. Brian will be fencing and compete in the Torchlight Tournament. I’ll see if I can go sit in on some classes. I dont have anythign specifically made for the A&S tournament, so I’ll probably sit this one out. Brian might submit a gemstone, though.
Although this is technically “work” for me, I always look at Blackstone fondly. Blackstone is full of firsts for us. It was our first SCA event. It was the first time I ran into someone who had not only read a book I had, but who said she loved it. Brian got to fight. I won an award for my art. Lemony got to try fishing. People understoond what I was doing with my art and they GOT IT.
So this weekend, even though it’s technically work, it feels like we’re going home.
We have some local Pittsburgh Events we’re going to this week!
First off is Thursday’s event, the Wyland PTO’s 3rd Annual Mom’s Night Out held at the Narcisi winery in Gibsonia. It’s a gorgeous location, and tickets are only $40! That’s pretty dang good for a night out drinking wine.
Whether you’re into Valentine’s Day or not, it’s coming, and there’s more to look forward to than day-after discount chocolate.
On February 4th, 10 days before, you can join us and a bunch of other local artists and makers to shop!
So, if you’re looking for something for your sweetheart or you’re single and want to show yourself some love, you should come to SouthSide Works and see what’s in store. Carrie and the I Made It! crew always put on a great show!
It’s 2017! I hope you had a great holiday. Ours was… A little crazy, but we’re fine. Any by crazy, I mean four days of over a hundred mile car rides and the power steering giving out on McKnight, but I digress. We’re fine, and we had fun seeing our families and going to the little one’s first violin recital. It was adorable.
But what’s in store for 2017? Well, aside from planning for our future brick-and-mortar, we’re confirmed for Gulf Wars, a massive SCA event down South in mid-March. We also have an event coming up this weekend, the Winter Food Truck-a-Paloosa!
It’s indoors on the 7th at the Monroeville Convention Center, so you don’t have to worry about crappy weather ruining your food. There’s also going to be music, kids’ activities, and a craft market set up, which we will be a part of! I’m really excited, because this means delicious food trucks that I normally can’t get to at outdoor shows. I’m either stuck alone in the tent and can smell them, whch is torture, or they’re so far away I have no idea what’s there and I don’t know if I can eat it or not, so I usually don’t bother.*
Mac & Gold truck, I got you in my sights. Same to you, Oh My Grille. I’ve not seen Billu’s Indian Grille, but if it’s got chicken vindaloo in it, it’s got my money already.
So, hungry yet? Join us this weekend at the Food Truck-a-Paloosa for some delicious local food! Tickets are only $10, and the proceeds benefit Monroeville Volunteer Fire Department #6.
*Fun Bran Fact – I have an intolerance to mammal meat. I react just like someone with lactose intolerance. It sucks, but I deal. Just gotta watch what I eat. Luckily, there’s PLENTY I can eat on Saturday.
That’s the big question, isn’t it? It’s the beginning of January, so it’s time to make some plans and start getting things done. If you’re in the SCA like us, you probably got some cool new Society-themed toys for Christmas. Now that it’s 2016, you’re making plans to finally get that weaving done, or learn how to sew. Perhaps you’ve got your eye on a top combat spot, and you’re eager for your local practices to start up again.
I know it’s early, but Gulf Wars isn’t that far off. If you meet weekly, you’ve got only 8 or so more meetups until it’s time to hit the field! With that in mind: What do you need to make your persona complete?
I do metalwork, and I know literally dozens of professional artists and craftspeople. I can help you get your look together in more ways than one! Leave a comment and I’ll do my best to get you in touch with people who either sell what you’re looking for, or who can make it happen. My commission schedule is wide open now that the holiday orders are finished, so if you need metalwork, we’ll get it done.
As you can see, the 12th Night Sale is going strong! I just want to remind you that it ends soon and most of the items are One of a Kind. When they’re gone, they’re gone. We have a few days left, so you can still share them with your friends and family as a “subtle” hint.
I’d also like to remind you that the Procrastinator’s Ball is in two days, and the 12th Night Sale prices will apply. We’re going to be in the Ballroom at Spirit, in Lawrenceville, and there’s some amazing music lined up, along with a host of wonderful local artists. Just look for our “castle walls” – We shouldn’t be hard to spot!
As I’ve mentioned before, Brian is also a writer, and this weekend he’ll be selling digital copies of his book along with some short stories at Steel City Con! There will be loads of celebrities, lots of cool vendors of geeky stuffs, and, of course, books!
What is his book, you ask? Well, it’s a YA novel about a super hero with a very unusual power. He’s forced into the lead position when evil strikes the city while his partner is away on vacation. The evil is also quite unusual, too. I’ll just leave you with the tagline:
“Horace Pickle hates mashed potatoes, but now he has a plan.”
