Romanesque Sandal Pin

SKU: N/A Category: Tag:

The Romans used pins to keep their clothes fastened and for decoration. Enamelled pins of sandals were a popular design and a great number have been found in the former western Roman territories of the Roman Empire. Why shoes? No one really knows, but there’s a number of theories, one being that they were worn mainly by soldiers as hobnail boots were part of their gear. Click here for an example.

These pins are made from copper etched with hobnails and based on Roman examples. In place of glass enamel, I’ve used alcohol-based inks to add color.

Length: 1 5/8 inches
